WHAT IS AN NPI? 

• A unique 10-digit identification number for healthcare providers in the United States. 

• Issued by CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) via the NPPES (National Plan & Provider Enumeration System). 

• Required by HIPAA for all healthcare providers, health plans, and clearinghouses when submitting electronic transactions (claims, eligibility checks, etc.).

🔹 Who gets an NPI 

• Individual providers: doctors, dentists, nurses, physician assistants, therapists, pharmacists, etc.

 • Organizations: hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, home health agencies, labs, pharmacies, etc. ________________________________________ 

🔹 Why it matters

 • It’s a national, permanent ID — it doesn’t change if a provider moves states, changes specialties, or switches jobs. 

• Used across billing, insurance, and patient records to uniquely identify a provider. ________________________________________ 

👉 For example: 

• Dr. John Smith, MD → NPI: 1234567890 

• St. Mary’s Hospital → NPI: 0987654321 

It is a zip file containing a csv file. Other formats available (it’s too big for Excel as it is so we’d have to break it down into smaller files).
